Down the Great Unknown
by Edward Dolnick, 2002
This book was donated by Roger Faaborg.
John Wesley Powell's 1869 Journey of Discovery and Tragedy Through the Grand Canyon.
I highly recommend this book. Since I have floated Gates of Lodore and Deso/Gray, I was familiar with some of the places Powell floated. He named most of the landmarks along the river. Powell started at Green River, Wyoming, where the boats were shipped by train. They floated down the Green into the Colorado and through the Grand Canyon. Each day was an adventure and the author keeps your attention. It's a good book.
